Challenges on the Job

Challenges & Pressure

Being an EMT comes with a lot of pressure, both physically and emotionally. Some calls are intense because of the environment, like working in extreme heat with heavy gear. Others are difficult because of what you see and experience.

From the Perspective

Leon talked about how important it is to manage stress. EMTs use training, exercise, and even time off to reset mentally. Talking to others about tough calls also helps them process what they’ve been through.

"This job can change how you see the world. It makes you more aware of your surroundings and more conscious about health and safety." - Francisco Leon

What This Career Really Requires..

This interview showed me that being an EMT is about more than just medical skills. Communication is a huge part of the job—from writing reports to talking with patients and working with a team.

One of the biggest skills Leon mentioned is staying calm under pressure. When EMTs stay calm, they can think clearly and make better decisions.

Research also supports this. Communication and accurate documentation are essential in emergency medical services because they directly affect patient care and safety. EMTs need to be able to quickly understand situations and clearly explain them to others.

Overall, this career requires strong communication, teamwork, and the ability to handle high-stress situations.
